Marfa, TX: Judd Foundation

Visit: We met with Caitlin Murray, who had been serving as Archivist for about a year. She is their first formal Archivist. Caitlin showed us around the vaults and described the progress and future needs. We have an overview finding aid, as well as formal reports and mission statement:

"As part of Judd Foundation’s ongoing mission to preserve and promote the artistic legacy of Donald Judd, the Foundation is actively processing, preserving, and working to make accessible the Donald Judd Archives. The Archives contains rich visual and textual documentation of Judd’s life and work and includes published and unpublished writings, correspondence, drawings, photographs, moving image material, gallery files, fabricator files, publications, exhibition ephemera, and family records."

It was an impressive undertaking, and will be in process for many years. Judd's work is a mixture of fine art and design, and covers a remarkable amount of material.

Discoveries: The Donald Judd Oral history Project.

In addition to the several exhibitions and tours which are available through both the Judd foundation and the Chinati Foundation, Marfa is home to a wonderful bookstore, and one of the finest restaurants we had the pleasure of eating in: Cochineal.
